Eric can't remember the recurring dream that keeps waking him in the middle of the night with an overwhelming urge to leave, yet he spends each day feeling as if he desperately needs to be somewhere. With no idea how to cure himself of this odd new compulsion, he decides to let it take its course and go for a drive, hoping that once he proves to himself that there is nowhere to go, he can return to his normal life. Instead, he finds himself hurled headlong into a nightmare adventure across a fractured Wisconsin as the dream reveals itself one heart-pounding detail at a time.

Horror, science fiction, dark fantasy. From the author of The Temple of the Blind. 84,000 words.

This Suspense give to us some advantages, like this :
1. OMFG!!!
Okay, now THIS was interesting! I like the way the story's written - not that it's just written clearly, well, and with good grammar, spelling, and punctuation, but that the plot is so unique! I'm reminded of Odd Thomas from Dean Koontz - the uniqueness about the characters is so intresting! Eric seems to be a well-adjusted, healthy, average fellow with no mental or psychological complications - then, the dream. The dream that won't go away. The dream that keeps... compelling.... him...

From the development of the initial character, to seeing his family surrounding him, to his sense of humor, I loved everything about this book. And the imaginativeness and warped plot just kept me up way too long into the night reading. I am very, very happy with this book, I love the grisly details of the environment, of what poor Eric deals with, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the ending! It's just too fitting. Seriously, if you like something that'll keep you turning pages but make you smile or...

2. Started with a great idea, went nowhere. Over and over again.
So I really loved the start of this book and the plot. It was very exciting. This guy Eric keeps having a dream and feels he needs to be somewhere. But as the story went on I began to get annoyed at how the Author kept saying Eric hates cell phones, didn't want to use them, etc. And also every time Eric would remember something the author would remind us the he remembered it from his dream. Over and over. But we already know that. Him following his dream and remembering stuff from it is what the story is about. It's not like we forgot. And it wold be mentioned right after already saying it a few sentences ago. After the 5th time it was getting too annoying. It just went on and on .... he hates cell phones ... remembered this from his dream .... he wanted to just get rid of his cell phone ..... this was familiar because it was in his dream .... He used the cell phone through his entire journey so it was useful, but at the end of the book he is STILL talking about how he hates cell...

Great, suspenseful read
I am really glad I found this download. I try to save my reading for when I have to kill time, like when I'm taking public transportation or waiting somewhere, but I couldn't help but read this at home, too. At first I expected it to be like an Odd Thomas rip-off because of the protagonist's urge to go somewhere even though he didn't know where he was going. This was nothing like the Odd Thomas books at all. The journey itself was the focus of the story, more so than the destination, and what a strange, trippy journey it was. The destination was pretty crazy, too, now that I'm thinking about it. If you have an open mind and can lose yourself in a tale of the weird and supernatural, then you will probably enjoy this book as much as I did. I can't wait to order more from this author. I already have all the free stories and now I'm delighted to see that he's written a series (The Temple of the Blind books 1-6).
HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS STORY!!!!

The Lowland

National Book Award FinalistShortlisted for the 2013 Man Booker PrizeFrom the Pulitzer Prize-winning, best-selling author of The Namesake comes an extraordinary new novel, set in both India and America, that expands the scope and range of one of our most dazzling storytellers: a tale of two brothers bound by tragedy, a fiercely brilliant woman haunted by her past, a country torn by revolution, and a love that lasts long past death.   Born just fifteen months apart, Subhash and Udayan Mitra are inseparable brothers, one often mistaken for the other in the Calcutta neighborhood where they grow up.  But they are also opposites, with gravely different futures ahead. It is the 1960s, and Udayan—charismatic and impulsive—finds himself drawn...

This Family Saga give to us some advantages, like this :
1. Selfless or selfish? I never could decide.
As someone who loved The Namesake, perhaps my expectations were too high. I was really hoping The Lowland would be great. Unfortunately, for me, it fell flat.

Brothers Subhash (the responsible serious one) and Udayan (15 months younger, and the rebellious one) grew up together in Calcutta during the politically tumultuous 60's. After college, Subhash heads to the US to further his studies, Udayan stays in Calcutta and becomes involved in a political uprising. When he is killed, leaving behind a pregnant wife, Subhash steps in and fills the role of husband to widowed Gauri and father to his niece-to-be.

The Pros: This is a period in history I knew very little about. Lahiri does a great job of summarizing the political landscape of India in the 1960's. I loved learning how the politics of post-colonial India tied to Maoist China, Castro's Cuba, and Che Guevara. For exmple, I had no idea that Castro destroyed most of Cuba's golf courses when he came into power...

2. Another triumph
I don't read a lot of mainstream fiction, but Jhumpa Lahiri is one name that always gets my attention, and her latest book is as good as, if not better than her previous efforts. Even though her characters (typically Bengalis transplanted to the United States) could hardly be farther from my experience, she manages to make them alive and makes us care about what happens to them. And her descriptions of place are so vivid that I felt that I'd been to Calcutta. The book is nominally about the contrasting experiences of two brothers, but that's just what gets things rolling: it's a saga of three (and more) generations of a family dealing with the encounter of two cultures which are very different (and yet in many ways very much the same), and with the moral choices that confront them.

The Lowland
One of the subjects of Jhumpa Lahiri's second novel is the relationship between historical and personal time, the way single lives can encompass remarkably different places and eras, the persistence of the past. It spans two continents and more than fifty years in the lives of several characters. As such, it's a difficult book to review without at least hinting at certain plot details that readers might like to discover for themselves. So those who want to experience the book with little or no sense of what happens should stop at the end of this paragraph for fear of SPOILERS. For them, and for those who prefer brief reviews, the next couple sentences will have to suffice. THE LOWLAND is an impressive, frequently moving novel, treating with quiet realism events that could easily have degenerated into melodrama. It expresses with new force the journey from mid-twentieth century India to contemporary America that has been a consistent feature of Lahiri's fiction, reminding us that for...

Game, Set, Match (A Humorous Contemporary Romance) (Love Match)

Sassy contemporary Romance. 99,000 words.  This is the revised ebook editionOff the court, tennis star Jason Cartwright's playboy image is taking a public beating. On the court, he's down forty-love. A knee injury is shutting down his game, and the paparazzi are splashing his love life on every magazine. A comeback is in order, but the makeover he needs to save his faltering career is in the hands of the woman he loved and left fifteen years ago. While single-mom, Izzy Connors, sees people for who they really are through the lens of her camera, even without it, she knows Jason isn't the star he appears to be. Although his charm and good looks haven't dimmed since he broke her heart, all she sees is his wasted talent and playboy lifestyle. ...

This Comedy give to us some advantages, like this :
1. Fresh voice, fun story
Finally! A fresh voice in contemporary romance. Game, Set, Match by Nana Malone is a delightful, sexy story with well-written characters and an entertaining storyline. The heat between old flames, Jason and Izzy, is obvious from their first encounter. They volley witty dialogue and calculated innuendos at each other like a fast-paced tennis match, and you're never sure who's going to win. Both characters have scarred pasts that cause them to make mistakes in the present, but they're also both determined to learn from that damaging past and move on.

From the first page, Izzy's personality grabbed me. She's a workaholic mother who'll do whatever it takes to protect and guide her foster son, Nick, a boy she loves just like her own. In the process, she's forced to deal with Nick's birth mother, a drug addict who cares about no one but herself. Izzy also has to deal with the fact that the odds of a single, black woman being allowed to adopt a white boy are slim to none. But...

2. Game, Set, Match by Nana Malone
Izzy Conners has been raising the now teenage Nick, pretty much his whole life. Although not his birth mother, he has lived with her and she has cared and loved him as if he was her own. Sabrina, Nick's biological mother has issues of drug abuse and dropping off the face of the Earth at convenient times. Izzy is acting currently as a foster mother, never being able to convince the courts to proceed with adoption. Izzy often wonders if it is because she is black, and Nick is white - but the courts say mothers and children should always be tried to kept together.

Fifteen years ago, Izzy and the now tennis superstar Jason Cartwright were friends - and maybe even a little more. But they lost touch - until now. Izzy has been scheduled to photograph Jason for Sports Illustrated. Jason is currently on the sidelines with a knee injury, but that doesn't mean he is still not in the public eye. They reunite and there are definitely some sparks. But, Izzy is in a relationship with her...

Entertaining, engaging, funny and lusty all in one great read.
Nana Malone's Game, Set, Match is a great read. I really enjoyed the book and was immediately pulled into the lives of the characters. Even with a celebrity in the cast, they all come across as real people with real life drama and passions. I was laughing one minute and blushing the next with the seamless mix of humor and hot scenes. I hope to get more of Izzy and of course Jessica soon!

MINE FOR TONIGHT: Book One - The Billionaire's Obsession

This book is free on most venues. If the book is not free, it is not the choice of the author. Please direct your concerns to the vendor. Genre: Adult Contemporary Steamy RomanceDown on her luck, nursing student and full-time waitress Kara Foster gets a massive blow to her already desperate financial situation that will surely find her living on the streets. Needing nothing less than a miracle to save her, Kara gets rescue from an unknown, unlikely and overwhelming source. Billionaire Simon Hudson makes her an offer that is impossible to refuse, but terrifying to accept from a man that she's never met. Will the handsome, alpha billionaire really be a solution to her problems, or will he end up being a major complication and a danger to...

This Contemporary Women give to us some advantages, like this :
1. Mine for Tonight
PLOT: Simon is obsessed with Kara. When the opportunity to help her presents itself, he moves her into his apartment. All he asks is one night with her. Only he has to have complete control.

PROS: The chemistry between Kara and Simon is hot. Both characters have depth and feel well rounded.

CONS: It ends abruptly in a cliff hanger. Book 2 is called Mine For Now. Book 3 is Mine Forever. I haven't read those and I don't plan to. Nothing infuriates me more than a cliffhanger. I'm not a fan of this emerging trend of selling a portion of a story. I'd rather buy one longer story for four or five dollars than a group of short stories containing the same characters.

2 STARS and a big fat INCOMPLETE stamp: I actually enjoyed the story up until the end. Breaking this into different books would make sense if it were 200+ pages. There's no reason this can't be one story. Well, there is one: Money.

2. I didn't realise this was ANOTHER Trilogy
I'm glad I got this book for free as I was shocked when it ended with no conclusion and I then realised it was part of a trilogy.

Simon is a billionaire computer geek. He designs bestselling computer games. He does not like the social scene and is a loner. He doesn't have relationships but he does have sex. A year ago he saw Kara at his mothers restaurant where she worked as a waitress. He became obsessed with her and in a way stalked her for a year without her knowing. He would follow her home etc. One night whilst watching her he is surprised when she is wearing 'sexy' clothes so he follows her. Kara has had a virus that she has not recovered from and as she is walking back to her apartment she shares with another student, she feels faint and dizzy.

Simon helps her and takes her to his Condo and calls a Dr. He explains he is her boss's son but although she knows of him and his brother, she has never met them. Kara is a mature student and is in medical school...

I quite enjoyed the story-- a no brainer, quick entertaining read, then BAM. It's over--with no conclusion, you're just left hanging.

Nikola Tesla: Imagination and the Man That Invented the 20th Century

If you want to learn about one of history's most fascinating minds and uncover some of his secrets of imagination--secrets that enabled him to invent machines light years ahead of his time and literally bring light to the world--then you want to read this book.Imagination amplifies and colors every other element of genius, and unlocks our potential for understanding and ability. It's no coincidence that geniuses not only dare to dream of the impossible for their work, but do the same for their lives. They're audacious enough to think that they're not just ordinary players. Few stories better illustrate this better than the life of the father of the modern world, a man of legendary imaginative power and wonder: Nikola Tesla. In this book, you...

This Creativity give to us some advantages, like this :
1. Self Help Teaser
This book is more of a teaser to the author's self help work than any real coverage of Nikola Tesla. I got it free and it was scarcely worth the price of admission. I read the entire work in less than two hours. One third of the book is an introduction full of quotes and name drops from people such as Malcolm Gladwell or Mark Twain that had little relevance to the text. My high school history book contained nearly as much information on Tesla as this book. If you know absolutely nothing about Tesla and the dramatic conspiracies against him, read the wikipedia article. It has much more about the man and his life than this book. Tesla is a fascinating figure and I highly recommend anyone interested in our scientific heritage learn more about his life and work.

2. Quite an interesting read!
This was a great free book, although a short one. I should warn, however, that the first part does not talk about Tesla, but rather the nature of greatness. This rather long prologue of sorts was not boring by any means, many interesting historical anecdotes were given on a variety of famous people. If you are only interested in reading about Tesla, however, you will need to skip nearly a third of the book. That being said, I enjoyed both parts thoroughly. Tesla has long been a hero of mine, a greatly misunderstood genius, constantly done in by unscrupulous men and his own sense of generosity and fair play. I've often wondered if Tesla had had a ruthless but devoted manager to keep the wolves at bay, how many more brilliant theories and inventions would he have created? Sadly, the world will never know, we must just be grateful for what he did accomplish.

A very informative and interesting book.
I really enjoyed reading this book. While I knew a few things about Tesla I learned quite a bit more about him when I read this book. The book is very well written and is very informative. I also learned a few things about Thomas Edison that I did not know. I was shocked to find out how he treated Tesla. However, Tesla didn't let Thomas Edison, or anyone else, stop him from turning his ideas into reality. Yea Tesla! Great message in that for us all.

Perfect Crime

A San Francisco wife plots to murder her philandering husband by being in two places at one time. She commits the Perfect Crime and starts an exciting new life with a sexy new boyfriend, living off the life insurance policy of her murdered husband. Until her doorbell rings one night . . . .

This Psychological Thrillers give to us some advantages, like this :
1. Nice Short Story - Could Be Outline for a Full-Length Novel?
If you think about a short story, the author has to be pretty good to capture your imagination and get you involved with either the characters or plot due to the limited of nature of words he or she has with these parameters. Jack Erickson does a good job of that, as I found myself able to quickly get into it and realized my heart rate increased a little bit as the action heated up, and I actually started rooting for the main character. The author has a nice writing style and this is a nice quick read, say for about 10 minutes, where you can read something good over your lunch break.

Without a spoiler, I will say there is also a nice little twist at the end I thought was a nice add. Thinking back on this short story, this really could be a full-length novel.

I'm looking forward to reading more from the author!

2. A real page turner with a good finish
This clearly written short story reads fast and keeps your attention until the very end. I enjoyed the descriptions of the environments and the people in the story.

1. A must have for the keeper shelf.
Two words. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Edie Claire has written a wonderful novel about friendship, love, guilt and death. Joy Hudson never completely moved passed the death of her best friend, Jenny Carver, which occurred right before their high school graduation. Now, almost twenty years later, Joy must travel back to her hometown to care for her ailing father and there she runs into Jeff Bradford, Jenny's boyfriend and the man that she has always blamed for the accident. 2. charming contemporary romance
After being away from her hometown of Wharton, Kentucky for eighteen years except for short visits to her parents, veterinarian Dr. Joy Hudson moves back. The only people who could make her return are her parents. Her septuagenarian mother suffers from glaucoma and cannot care for her dying octogenarian spouse by herself. Surprisingly everyone Joy buys the house in which her deceased best friend Jenny Carver once lived.

Started great but...
This is a hard book to rate, the beginning is excellent, the middle was fine but the quality of writing in the last third was disappointing.

This is romance novel with an unnecessary supernatural component. Joy (an odd name for a woman who has none) returns to her home town and must confront the man she holds responsible for the death for her best friend in high school. She has two men vying for her attention, a dying parent, a jealous ex-wife, someone trying to murder her, she is starting a new business, has revengeful business competition and the ghost of her died friend. This is too much junk to carry an effective storyline.

It was free on Kindle so the price was right.

1. kindle version is unabridged
To clarify a misconception -- in the "product details," the ISBN listed (1449565530) is in error, as is the corresponding number (218) of print pages. That ISBN corresponds to "Volume II, Cosette." A publisher broke the rather long book into volumes so that they could sell five books instead of just the one megabook, and volume II is 218 pages. The kindle book is the complete, unabridged edition with all five volumes. Like all scanned books, it has scattered scanning errors that you can, in general, read through without compromising the experience.

2. LIFE CHANGING....don't be afraid of it.
I know it's scary. It's probably one of the longest and hardest to read books you've ever picked up (or at least it was for me). Hugo goes into painstaking detail with his history, his scenery, and his character development. Reading on can be frustrating sometimes because you just can't see where the author is going. Minute descriptions of people, places, and political views abound. But you come to trust in Hugo...because you realize that no lengthy discussion is wasted with him. It has a purpose and a place and provides a richness to his story that I have never seen in any other work.

The scope and depth of the story is UNBELIEVABLE. The characters are so completely flesh and bone that you know them. You know who they are and exactly how they will react in a situation before it ever happens. The scenes are so masterfully laid out that you can envision every detail in your mind. And oh, believe me when I say the storytelling is breathtaking. Les Miserables is...

First Kindle use: a great experience
I started Les Mis with the translation by Fahnestock & MacAfee in paperback. After reading more than 3/4 of the book, I purchased a Kindle. While I awaited its arrival, I downloaded Kindle to my PC & searched for a Kindle copy of Les Mis (& didn't want to pay a second time for the book). I could not find the same translation, but this is very similar. I easily transferred over 450 highlights from my paper copy to the ebook (on my computer). It took time, but it was pretty straightforward (a little awkward since the translations weren't identical). It would have been much harder & longer to try to do that on the actual Kindle.

One thing I miss in this translation: "Slang" is usually used instead of "argot", "emeute" is not used for "riot". It was fun to have some French words which would be explained & repeated in the text, used as text (in the F & M translation), instead of a translation which seems weak (in the Kindle copy). This is why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5...

King and Maxwell (King & Maxwell)

David Baldacci brings back Sean King and Michelle Maxwell--former Secret Service agents turned private investigators--in their most surprising, personal, and dangerous case ever . . . KING AND MAXWELL It seems at first like a simple, tragic story. Tyler Wingo, a teenage boy, learns the awful news that his father, a soldier, was killed in action in Afghanistan. Then the extraordinary happens: Tyler receives a communication from his father . . . after his supposed death. Tyler hires Sean and Michelle to solve the mystery surrounding his father. But their investigation quickly leads to deeper, more troubling questions. Could Tyler's father really still be alive? What was his true mission? Could Tyler be the next target? Sean and Michelle soon...

1. Another Bestseller by Baldacci
Once again David Baldacci shows that he is a consummate author of popular thrillers in a page-turning adventure featuring two of his most popular characters, Sean King and Michelle Maxwell - former Secret Service agents turned private investigators. This book will undoubtedly become a pre-Christmas bestseller.

King and Maxwell are driving through a storm when they nearly hit a teenage boy, Tyler Wingo, wandering the highway in the dark. They find that he has fled his nearby home after hearing that his father has been killed in Afghanistan. When they take him home it is clear that Tyler is on his own as there is no love lost with his stepmother.

Next day Tyler contacts them directly and hires them to find out more about his father's death. He tells them he is concerned because he has been told by the Army that there will be no casket as his father's remains are not recognisable. What Tyler doesn't tell them is that he has received a carefully worded email with a...

2. Not a standalone book
For me this is a book in two parts. I found the first third of the book mostly ho hum. There were some exciting parts, for instance how they found their teenage client, but there were lots of references to past books cases that left me, if not lost, bored. The only other Baldacci book I've read is "The Innocent" which I found edge of my chair exciting right from the start, a completely different experience than with "King and Maxwell". After the beginning third the action began to pick up and by about half way through I was hooked. It still wasn't as good as "The Innocent" but it is well worth reading if you can get through the opening. Mostly what bored me was the push pull relationship between the two main characters. Their not quite love affair felt too prolonged and plain silly. Again maybe if I'd read some of the previous books in this series that plot element would have been more compelling.

The back and forth action between the Middle East and the US added...

Kind of like watching a TNT made-for-TV movie.
I like beef stew. David Baldacci has written a nice big pot of beef stew. Everything works nicely together, but there isn't much spice, so it's kind of bland. The two main characters Sean King and Michelle Maxwell have a fun interaction going on. If you've ever seen the American TV show, King & Maxwell, shown on the TNT network, you will recognize these characters. The storyline is a bit far-fetched, and then there is the teenage boy who is told that his dad was killed, and the teenage girl, and their side story, so this book really has the feel of a made-for-TV movie.

This is a pleasant, light, easy to read, book with plenty of action. It kept my interest. I zipped right through it. This would be a perfect beach book if it was Summer, but since it is getting cold out, I guess I would say that this is a good book to take on your Caribbean cruise. I'm sure that you can pick it up in the airport book seller on the way to catch your plane. You can read it on the deck, while...

This Contemporary give to us some advantages, like this :
1. No plot. Just sex. Spoiler alert!
The description of this "book" talks about a woman who was left heartbroken, alone and pregnant. She will never forgive the man
Who left her this way. Five minutes after a chance encounter they are having steamy sex in a garage!
No plot or character development. Penthouse Forum is far more believable. Oh, the book cover does deserve 5 stars!

2. Potential is there, but too short to deliver
I picked this very short ebook up free, so didn't have much expectations. I thought the writing was good, and I would read more by this author. My only beef is this story moved at such a fast pace! It had potential, including (what could be) a great cast of characters for a series, but over all it was too short to care about the characters. So much was left unsaid and unaddressed. BUT, since this appears to be a teaser for a series, we may get those answers in later books.

Waste of time and a horrible story .......spoiler alert
The author wants us to believe that a woman who has raised her son alone for 9 years, because Dad left town. Who has the smarts to run her own business, and run her father's farm, is dumb enough to falls right back in Dane's arms within minutes. It reads like maybe 5 minutes had passed before she is not only having sex with Dane but unprotected sex at that! Please...no women with any self-respect would do that. All Dane needs to do is bang her a few times says he is sorry and that is that?! What a crock! Don't waste your time on this book.

The Hit (Will Robie)

From David Baldacci--#1 bestselling author and one of the world's most popular, widely read storytellers--comes the most thrilling novel of the year. THE HIT Will Robie is a master of killing. A highly skilled assassin, Robie is the man the U.S. government calls on to eliminate the worst of the worst-enemies of the state, monsters committed to harming untold numbers of innocent victims. No one else can match Robie's talents as a hitman...no one, except Jessica Reel. A fellow assassin, equally professional and dangerous, Reel is every bit as lethal as Robie. And now, she's gone rogue, turning her gun sights on other members of their agency. To stop one of their own, the government looks again to Will Robie. His mission: bring in Reel, ...

"The Hit" is David Baldacci at his brilliant best - a page turning action thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat right through to the very end.

Robie is given his hardest and most dangerous assignment yet - to hunt down and eliminate rogue fellow assassin Jessica Reel who has killed her handler and is systematically killing associates. Reel is especially deadly because she is almost Robie's match as a professional killer.

His thoughts on the assignment are simple - "Sending a killer to catch a killer actually made sense. We talk a different language and we see the world through a separate prism that no one else could possibly understand....So Reel dead, or me. It really was that simple. And also that complicated."

As with most of Baldacci's stories, nothing is as it seems and the plot has more exciting twists and...

2. NOT HIS BEST WORK
I have read many of the reviews written about this book and just can't agree with the people who gave it five stars. I love David Baldacci's books and have enjoyed most of them but this one was predictable and just didn't grab me. The opening scene got my attention and led me to believe that it was going to be another Will Robie page turner however, it fell flat after that. I continued to read hoping that it would pick up, which it did, somewhere around the middle of the book. It was, indeed, full of twists and turns but was still predictable with flat characters and boring dialogue. Will I buy the next Baldacci book? Yes, because this author is capable of writing wonderful novels - just look at the Camel Club series and the two previous novels featuring Will Robie.

1. Couldnt get into it
Could not get into it because of the planned violence by a psychopathic character. As a psychotherapist, I can only tolerate a certain amount of violent, and this seemed like it was going over the top.

2. Was good...until...
Although the book itself was good, I was more then disappointed that in order to know how it ended, you needed to buy the next book! If this is any indication of what the rest of the books are like, I am not interested in it at all.

a ver good book.
I almost stopped reading during the chapter on the killer but am so glad I didn't. This story has do many twists to it that it kept me intrigued all the way through including the second book so expect to buy the second book because it is the end of the story. Like a sequel. I loved it.
It does have some bad language in it like the " f" word just so you know.

W is for Wasted (Kinsey Millhone Mystery)

Of the #1 New York Times–bestselling Kinsey Millhone series, NPR said, “Makes me wish there were more than 26 letters.” Two dead men changed the course of my life that fall. One of them I knew and the other I’d never laid eyes on until I saw him in the morgue. The first was a local PI of suspect reputation. He’d been gunned down near the beach at Santa Teresa. It looked like a robbery gone bad. The other was on the beach six weeks later. He’d been sleeping rough. Probably homeless. No identification. A slip of paper with Millhone’s name and number was in his pants pocket. The coroner asked her to come to the morgue to see if she could ID him. Two seemingly unrelated deaths, one a murder, the other apparently of natura...

This Women Sleuths give to us some advantages, like this :
1. "Luck caught up with him and pushed him off the cliff."
The year is 1988. When thirty-eight year old private investigator Kinsey Millhone tries to make sense of a puzzling crime, she jots her notes down on index cards, conducts research in library archives, and determines people's veracity using her finely-honed intuition and innate common sense. As Sue Grafton's "W is for Wasted" begins, Kinsey informs us that business has been slow of late, leaving her free to look into two unexplained deaths. One is the murder of a former associate, Pete Wolinsky, a shady private detective known for his habit of cutting corners. Pete "was morally shabby, disorganized, and irresponsible with money." The second involves a "John Doe" found with Kinsey's name and telephone number on a piece of paper in his pocket. When a representative of the coroner's office asks Kinsey to identify the body, she dutifully agrees. However, after taking a close look at the corpse, she informs the authorities that she has never laid eyes on the man.

2. W is for Wonderful! (5 stars)
After reading the recent Kinsey and Me: Stories by Sue Grafton all it did was whet my appetite for the new Alphabet Murder Mystery by Ms. Grafton.

I have to say I for one will be saddened when Ms. Grafton eventually reaches Z is for...since I will not know what I will do without my yearly dose of Kinsey Millhone.

This novel takes place more than a year after the events in V is for Vengeance. We have what at first seems to be a murder and one unexpected death with no ties between them. However, as Kinsey comes onto the scene, we eventually figure out how these two deaths are linked.

The murder victim was Pete Wolinsky, a local P.I. that Kinsey knew when she was working on obtaining her private investigator credentials. The unexpected death was a homeless man, John Doe, that had Kinsey's phone number and name in...

Honestly, this was terrible.
I started reading Grafton's alphabet series 20 years ago when I was 12 years old. I've kept up with them avidly since then, usually finishing the new release the day it comes out and whining that I now have to wait 2-3 years for the next installment. Though there were a few stinkers in the preceding novels, I've been shocked by how bad this book is.

The typos alone are inexcusable, but the entire book suffers from a severe lack of editing. Paragraph upon paragraph of tedious description and insignificant details coupled with every single character spouting completely unnecessary exposition and all doing so with the same narrative voice, does not make for good writing nor good reading.

Grafton seems to have forgotten that Kinsey is only 38, and a fit 38 at that, as she gives her asides about not knowing how she'll get up from sitting on the ground and other problems only a much older person and/or someone far more out of shape than her heroine would even think...

Village Books

*** Winner of the 2012 Independent eBook Award for best Literary Fiction! ***Village Books is a local institution...which is good, because most of the staff probably belong in one.The manager's addiction to WebMD has turned him into a closeted hypochondriac. The cashier's husband may have just gone AWOL with a small arsenal of fragmentary explosive devices. The fiction lead is buying urine on the black market. Trying to hold it all together is the store's long-suffering assistant manager, who is spinning his wheels in retail while he waits for something better to come along. That something better may be Leah Dashwood, an aspiring actress and new assistant manager with an ambitious plan to transform the store and its staff in a way that will ...

1. Have a Scrumpy Jack on me
I'm neither a writer nor a reviewer so please excuse my lack of eloquence. Happily, eloquence is not a problem for this author. Village Books is full of interesting characters whose conversation is both witty and droll. However, this isn't just a look inside of the goings-on of a bookstore - there's also a progressive story line.

I love book stores and am very glad I stopped in to visit this one. I really felt I got to know the characters and their stories by the satisfying end of the book.

The book is well written and appears to be professionally edited. I "purchased" it as a free and un-reviewed book based on the product description. Having read it I can honestly say that this book is worth purchasing for $ and I will recommend it.

(Edited to remove apology to author for quality of my review)

2. Who is Craig McLay and why hasn't he written anything else?
I think I got this book free for Kindle. I kind of wish I had paid for it. The experience has been so good that I feel guilty getting it for free. Besides, somewhere the author is, I hope, hard at work on his next book, and someone has to supply him with wings and Italian reds.

It's hard to characterize this book. I'm a fan of a lot of different genres, many of which don't seem to go together well. I love sexy women's mysteries like those by Janet Evanovich and Sue Grafton. I also like gritty police stories, like those by Joseph Wambaugh and Michael Connolly. I love Neil Gaiman and Robert Heinlein and Dean Koontz when he was in his prime. I love Coben's Myron Bolitar Series and Repairman Jack. This book isn't anything like any of those. It's sort of Donald Westlake and sort of Carl Hiaasen, and yet it's entirely new and different and funny and touching and captivating.

This is a book about smart, funny people. The characters have depth and interests...

Do not read this book in the subway!
Read this book on the subway and you risk terminus interruptus by men in white coats.

The last time I read a book this funny was late in the early part of the last century. I had graduated from short trousers and a ticket to the adult library had introduced me to the writings of P.G. Wodehouse.

In "Village Books" one does not browse, one delves. Each character has a non-stereotypical idiosyncrasy ranging from Sebastian's inventive urine samples for his bail to Willard's exotic product lines in receiving.

If I say too much there is a risk of spoilers. Unlike those who downloaded this book free of charge initially, I purchased my copy when a Facebook advertisement led me to the blurb. Do as I did. Buy this book. Read this book. But first, have you taken your cardiac medication? Are you at risk of a kidney leakage? Are you in the subway? Be warned - this book contains an incurable strain of laughtus hystericus and it is highly contagious.

War Brides

The National BestsellerWith war threatening to spread from Europe to England, the sleepy village of Crowmarsh Priors settles into a new sort of normal: Evacuees from London are billeted in local homes. Nightly air raids become grimly mundane. The tightening vice of rationing curtails every comfort. Men leave to fight and die. And five women forge an unlikely bond of friendship that will change their lives forever.Alice Osbourne, the stolid daughter of the late vicar, is reeling from the news that Richard Fairfax broke their engagement to marry Evangeline Fontaine, an American girl from the Deep South. 1. Unexpectedly well done
I'm still in the grip of this fascinating novel. I may just go back and read it again.
I try to avoid "romance novels", but the WWII setting and the friendship theme made me curious so I bought the book and was blown away! The author demonstrates a masterful ability to create a variety of seemingly authentic times and locations for her story. East End London slums, an old fashioned Sussex village, late '30's New Orleans at Mardi Gras time, and a city in Austria as Hitler rises to power. All these settings and the characters and situations they serve are amazingly real and convincing.
The story (or stories, there are several)is more about coping with extraordinary circumstances and the way adapting changes attitudes, actions and whole lives. The growth of the friendship between these disparate women thrown together by chance is mesmerizing to read about.
The various love stories are believable and satisfying although not at all the point of these women's lives...

2. Don't buy the Kindle version
I really enjoyed this novel but Amazon must have out-sourced the transcription of it to an ESL provider or a very bad typist for the Kindle version. There are lots of typos, duplicate words, and missing words which made it frustrating to read at times. There were actually a few sentences that were incomplete, but I could intuit the thread of the thoughts being conveyed, so I just filled in. The plot and characters are very interesting so buy the paperback or check it out at the library.

Good Book, Terrible Editing
I liked this book pretty well but have some negative comments.

I became engrossed in the separate stories of the women and was happy to find out what happened to them in later life, however the ending seemed like the author ran out of steam. She wrapped everything up, I guess, but left an opening for the women to find out that some people were alive who had been believed to have died, some were dead who might be alive, somewhere there was someone's child no one knew about and, oh, the bad guy was the obvious bad guy.

The editing was atrocious. I suppose for $.99 I shouldn't expect much but yikes! There were passages that were indecipherable. Even cheap books should be readable, Amazon.

The Wild One (The De Montforte Brothers)

An Amazon # 1 in Kindle store BESTSELLER!"The bluest of blood, the boldest of hearts; the de Montforte brothers will take your breath away."England, 1776: Lord Gareth de Montforte is known as an irresponsible rake with a heart of gold. When he takes a bullet for boldly thwarting a stagecoach robbery, he is stunned to discover that the beautiful young woman he has heroically rescued, Juliet Paige, is his deceased brother's American fiancée, accompanied by her infant daughter. Despite his brother the duke's refusal to acknowledge Juliet, Gareth is determined to do right by the courageous woman who crossed an ocean to give her baby her rightful name. But Juliet is wary of marrying this black sheep aristocrat, even while she is hopelessly char...

This Historical give to us some advantages, like this :
1. I absolutely LOVED this book! (4 3/4 stars)
I LOVED THIS STORY. I thought that Gareth was unbearably adorable..so he was a little immature at times, but he was only 23 and I for one, was thoroughly charmed by him. I adored watching him with Juliet and especially his interactions with little Charlotte. I thought that Juliet was his perfect match , though Ill admit that at first it worried me that she had been involved with his brother, but my fears were soon laid to rest as I watched their love grow. My only quibble with this book was that sometimes I felt like other aspects of the plot overshadowed the romance, but for the most part..I LOVED THIS.. A definite keeper..I cannot wait to move onto the next in the series!

2. Very weak storyline
I absolutely hate giving negative reviews, but I would have appreciated reading some before I took the time to read this book. I honestly didn't think I could finish it, but plowed through it by skimming over a good deal in hopes that it would improve... It didn't.

First off was the quality of the writing. I was surprised to find this had actually been a print release, which ostensibly means an editor read it and line and copy editors proofed it. I was quite disappointed in the overall quality of the writing, not to mention the syntax, grammar, sentence structure and basic English errors. This nearly kept me from continuing to read.

The worst part of this book, however, is the horrific storyline. I wonder if Ms. Harmon researched her time period, customs, social dictates, etc. as from the beginning she had me rolling my eyes at her lack of knowledge of the social mores of those times, not to mention her total disregard for believability in a scene...

Loved it, loved it, LOVED IT!!!!!
This book was a refreshing and welcome change from the romance novels that I've read lately. I couldn't put it down. The hero, Lord Gareth de Montforte, is everything that a hero should be and more: he's strong, he's sexy, he's charming, he's courageous, he loves kids, and he goes to heroic lengths to make a future for his wife and infant daughter, risking his life in the process and winning my heart as well! If you like fast-paced, sexy stories, unique characters, an unusual plot, and books set in England, you'll LOVE this book. I did!!!!

A Little Bit of Everything For Dummies

Twenty years ago the very first For Dummies book, DOS For Dummies, was published. From that first printing of that first book came a series unlike anything in the publishing world, one that is global in both geography - we have been published worldwide in some 30 languages - and in coverage. No single volume can hope to summarize what thousands of titles have meant to millions of readers over the years, and we don't claim to do that in this e-book. Rather, this e-book celebrates the breadth and depth of the For Dummies series, offering 20 chapters - in honor of our 20 years - from a list of books compiled by our global colleagues. We are confident the chapters we've included give you a representative glimpse at why - no matter what the topi...

2. Good concept, thoughtless execution
I was excited to see what "A Little Bit of Everything for Dummies" would include. For example, I've bought several different "Dummies" books and I was excited to read a few chapters from a conglomerate of the series. However, the execution of this book immediately made me want to delete the book. Who wants to read a chapter from the middle of one of the books? The chapters that are included are not stand-alone chapters that a person can read and understand. This basically is an advertisement for the "Dummies" series so you could buy one of the books included. Unless a person knows something about every one of the subjects, the reader is completely lost through most of the sample chapters. What a waste of time! I'm glad I didn't waste any money.

The Circle

The Circle is the exhilarating new novel from Dave Eggers, best-selling author of A Hologram for the King, a finalist for the National Book Award. When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company’s modernity and activity. There are pa...

1. Do you really want to be on twenty four/seven? If yes, welcome to the Circle Community!
This is a little close to home for me since my daughter works for a social media mega company but I did think Dave Eggers spin on what social media could do to/for the world is interesting and a bit of a scary read. Mae starts her career after college with the help from a friend, Annie who is going places at a Silicon Valley mega social media corporation. The Circle seems harmless enough and has some really great perks - ice cream, state of the art workout facilities, fine dining and living quarters. Soon she finds herself surrounded by events she is "required" to attend and post online to bump her ratings in the Circle community. "Sharing is Caring" is one of the company's mottoes and as Mae soon discovers, her popularity and place in the company is slipping due to her perceived lack of interest in sharing every aspect of her day with the world. The Circle begins new programs to track and pry into every part of the world's life and soon some around her begin to rebel. Her family and...

1. If a social media corporation were to achieve a complete monopoly of all public and private information, we'd be in danger of becoming a totalitarian society.

2. People often willingly give up their privacy for convenience, societal benefit, or a needy and self-centered desire for affirmation.

If these premises seem facile to you, you might not enjoy Dave Egger's new novel, the Circle.

The writing is straight, mainstream, third-person limited narration. You won't find any of the layered themes, complex metaphor, formal experimentalism, stylistic prose or psychological lyricism common in modern literary fiction. Whether you'll consider this a bug or a feature is mainly a matter of taste; but it's worth mentioning, given Eggers' McSweeney's pedigree (this is the first book I've read by Eggers, so I wasn't sure what to expect).

The protagonist is Mae Holland, an enthusiastic, naive and downright submissive young woman (surprise) who gets a...

The book's main character is young woman Mae who finished college and plan to start her career. With the help of her friend, she will start working at the company named "The Circle" that provides everything anyone can need for a comfortable and relaxed work.

Although she cannot believe how fortunate she was to start working there, she will quickly realize that the success on her work position is associated with activities that are anything but voluntary, like attending events and sharing everything with the Circle community, about each and every minute of her life, or just like company motto is saying: "Sharing is Caring".

Slowly she began to be obsessed with her job that leads to conflicts with her family and friends who can no longer recognize her.

My frustration is over!!
I love downloading Kindle books, because I learn a ton from what other people have to say. But since I don't have a lot of money, I prefer the free books. It's awfully hard to wade through and find them though. So I'm glad I found this blog.

Unlike just buying a book that goes out of date, this blog gets updated several times a day, and makes it easy for any reader to find the books they're looking for. It's also not just a list: they include reviews of books that are informative and written in a fun style.

Another thing I like is that the blog covers a wide variety of books, so there's something for people who like all sorts of books. I've even learned more about different genres that I otherwise might not have found.

Never Go Back: A Jack Reacher Novel

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERNever go back—but Jack Reacher does, and the past finally catches up with him. . . . Never Go Back is Lee Child’s new novel of action-charged suspense starring “one of the best thriller characters at work today” (Newsweek).   Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had.   Reacher is there to meet—in person—the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone.   But it isn’t Turner behind the CO’s desk. And Reacher is hit with two pie...

This Suspense give to us some advantages, like this :
1. Where is Jack Reacher?
Where is Jack Reacher? Who is this imposter?

I am a huge Lee Child / Jack Reacher fan, and have been reading these books for years, but it has got to the point where I say that this could very well be my last Jack Reacher purchase. It pains me to say this, as these books have been the highlight of my reading calender for so long, but the decline has become more noticeable with this book.

There were a few times when I seriously considered not finishing the book, but this is Lee Child and Reacher, surely it can only get better? No, the writing was consistent throughout, it was boring and repetitive. The plot was weak, and every solution to a problem on both sides was just too convenient, unbelievably so on many occasions.

Jack Reacher, in my opinion, has become arrogant - he is no longer the Jack Reacher I have enjoyed reading about all these years. This new Jack does things because he can - not because he must in order to survive. The ridiculous fire...

2. Back on Active Duty
Getting a Reacher novel in the mail is a lot like being handed an ice cream cone on a sweltering summer day. It's simply not there for admiring or slowly savouring, you tuck right in and enjoy every lick. And like the cone, "Never Go Back" does not disappoint.

This time, Reacher travels back to his old MP unit to meet its new commander, mainly because he was intrigued by the sound of her voice on the telephone. Once there, he finds that she's been locked up, and he is being brought back on active duty so he can answer to a homicide charge and paternity suit. As always, nothing is quite as it seems, and Reacher has to peel back layer after layer to get to the truth. All while staying one step ahead of the law, drug dealers, and the Army.

I don't know if the Reacher series can get any better, but it certainly isn't getting any worse or showing any author fatigue. The writing is crisp, the pacing brilliant, and the plot is deliciously convoluted and...

Is author Child burning out?
For the last couple of books, Jack Reacher has been trying to make it back to the East Coast to meet the woman who has, up to this point, simply been a voice on the phone helping him out on his adventures.

Well, he finally makes it, and when he shows up at the headquarters of the MP unit she now commands, he's mousetrapped. She's been arrested and relieved of command, and he's been accused of crimes he'd allegedly committed back when he was an MP himself; he's recalled back into active duty - making him subject to military discipline and judicial punishment - and placed under arrest.

He manages to break her and himself out of jail, and the rest of the story is about how he tries to clear both their names by getting to the truth at the bottom of these events.

I've long been a Reacher fan, having read the entire body of work, and thoroughly enjoyed them until the last few offerings. I thought the last two were particularly weak. There are elements of...

Tea With Emma (The Teacup Novellas - Book One)

Tea with Emma - The Teacup Novellas Book OneFresh from a Jane Austen tour in England, Maddie Cooper returns home to Texas, determined to bring a touch of "Austen to Austin." She dreams of opening an authentic English tea room and, like Austen's Emma, put into practice her self-proclaimed gift as a matchmaker. But an airport mishap with a cranky Englishman gets her off on the wrong foot (quite literally), especially when he moves into the university guest house across the street. Can Maddie find a love for her unapproachable new neighbor, or has she finally met her match?

This Contemporary give to us some advantages, like this :
1. Tea With Emma
Author Diane Moody has released her first novella!

I'll be upfront with you - Diane is a friend, but there's more to our story than that - I'm also a fan of her writing. I love to do favors for friends. . .however this review is not that. This review is about a fresh voice in the fiction world and about a story so engaging I put the work I love to do on hold so I could finish it.

Maddie Cooper is a woman with a big dream inspired by a trip to England and she's not about to let anyone stop her from making that dream come true. Not even a grumpy new neighbor with a great accent - no matter how handsome he might be.

If you're looking for a fast and fun read, I highly recommend Tea With Emma. On every page Diane combines England, Texas, tea, romance, and a touch of faith with an elegant ease.

2. Austen in Austin
I absolutely love the premise of the Teacup Novellas series - a collection of teacups, each with its own story. In Tea With Emma, the author weaves a delightfully sweet and sunny Austen-esque tale in Austin, Texas that combines a British professor of English literature, a tea-room opening and a lovingly meddlesome matchmaker-wannabe who nearly misses the perfect match under her very nose. A charming, fun read -- I definitely recommend it!

So delightful! Great writing and a joy to read for Jane Austen fans!
Every once in a while you come across someone who writes so well, you want to put the book, or kindle down, and start clapping. I'm tired of 400 page books that could be condensed into a novella. What Diane Moody did in this short novel is tell a delightful story that is so creative and heartwarming, it could be a movie. If you love Jane Austen, you'll love this book. I can't wait to read the other teacup novella she's written. Bravo to Diane Moody...I'm applauding!

1. . . . or barely there
When my friends make fun of me for reading Patterson's novels, I point out that they are cracking good stories about engaging people. When that stops being true about one series, there's generally another series just firing up.

But this is the first time I've ever felt cheated of the price of admission.

I read this on Kindle, where it ends at 90%. It took only a couple of hours to hit 45% and I'm a slow reader. The Amazon site says there are 416 pages in the book. Really? How many reams of white space? Half the kids don't make it to breakfast, let alone into whole sentences. One of the twins, Bridget, is completely absent til literally the last page.

Several reviewers mention characters doing stupid stuff. Yes. No spoilers, but with this super-killer on the loose, it's hard to believe that family members -- adult family members -- would take stupid/silly chances. Yes, as readers we know that SuperKiller has to find the family. But if the...

2. Read Michael Bennett's previous books... this one is not worth it!
Why does this happen? A great fiction series like Michael Bennet gets stuck between the hype of the success and the rush to publish another book.
What happened here? This book has nothing to do with the previous ones which were written in a serious well crafted manner. The plot in this book has been used so many times there is a point where you don't know if you want to laugh or cry because its so predictable.
I hear Mr Patterson is one of the most prolific contemporary authors.... with books like this one any one can do that.
More respect to you readers please.

Cheated again. shame on you James Patterson. Or is it shame on me?
Michael Bennett and Alex Cross were two really engaging characters. They were well-defined and I knew and cared about how they reached where they were when i first met them. I looked forward to each new and thrilling story. Then Mr Patterson decided to check out. As I understand it, he produces a treatment of 60 to 80 pages, establishes the plot and characters, then he hires a writer to turn it all into a full-length book. I absolutely would not mind this if the hired writers were as talented as Mr Patterson, but they're not. I wouldn't buy their books and I feel conned into doing it just because I want to read about the main characters' storylines.

This latest Michael Bennett story is a prime example. There are pages and pages about the children and the family which I feel are written at a level suitable for eary teens. Then suddenly we leap to obscenely violent episodes, then presto chango we're back with the family in the witness protection program (or a very...

The Sheik's Dangerous Lover

Just like in the fairy tale, a lavish ball was being held to find Sheik Malik a bride. There was a darker side to this story though. The urgency was due to several assassination attempts and Malik had to marry quickly and produce an heir. The stability of his country depended on constancy and conservative leadership. He couldn’t allow his enemies to win. But he wasn’t prepared for the silver clad goddess that caught his vision as she snuck down the servants’ hallway. Nor was he prepared for her resistance. In a room full of beautiful women, his interest was captured by a beauty that wanted nothing to do with him. Except that she caught on fire when he touched her and her soft, sensuous body inflamed him with need. What was a m...

1. Don't read if you're looking for any sort of plot...
... or character. This story has no development whatsoever. It took forever for me to even figure out where this book was set. I'd been hoping this would be different from most of the stories about women who live in New York, or California, or Seattle, but nope. This was a quick read, not because you get sucked into it and want to read more, but because it's so poorly developed, it doesn't take long for you to figure out what's going on and pay attention to it.

2. Really???
Ok, the heroine is a law school graduate, studying for the bar, she has also been a model. Now, can you believe this chick is not only a virgin, she has no idea how the whole sex thing works. Is she just stupid or was she home schooled for 19 years? I'm sorry, I just can't buy all this "innocence". The book started off like it was going to be good. Then in a fit of temper she stomps her foot. What are we 5? She lost me right there and it just kept getting worse.

The sheik takes a shine to her but she is determined to not be his baby maker. Honestly, I didn't see what he saw in her to pursue her. Now maybe she needed to be a virgin to marry the ruler of the country, but I just don't buy it. I quit reading after the two of them had sex. She acted so immature and stupid I just couldn't find a thing to like about her. He was ok considering who he was and the way he was raised. I'm sure they live HEA but I didn't bother to finish reading to find out. I really don't...

This story is part of a series. Very short. I am really getting sick of buying "books" that are to short to be books!
The story itself left me a little disappointed. Won't be reading the rest of the books.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy

Bridget Jones—one of the most beloved characters in modern literature (v.g.)—is back! In Helen Fielding's wildly funny, hotly anticipated new novel, Bridget faces a few rather pressing questions:    What do you do when your girlfriend’s sixtieth birthday party is the same day as your boyfriend’s thirtieth? Is it better to die of Botox or die of loneliness because you’re so wrinkly? Is it wrong to lie about your age when online dating? Is it morally wrong to have a blow-dry when one of your children has head lice?Is it normal to be too vain to put on your reading glasses when checking your toy boy for head lice?Does the Dalai Lama actually tweet or is it his assistant? Is it normal to get fewer followers the more you tweet? Is techno...

This Satire give to us some advantages, like this :
1. Tiresome
Maybe it's me. Maybe because Bridget and I are about the same age, I could identify with her in my 30s and got a lot of giggles watching her fumble through life. But fumbling through life in your 50s, still obsessing about weight and men and cigarettes? Not so funny. The diary entries are self-indulgent and paranoid and annoying.
***SPOILER ALERT***
Mark is dead. Brige is a widow with two young kids and a much younger lover. And I honestly wonder if, prior to writing this book, Ms. Fielding's people could not secure Colin Firth to play Mark in any future film adaptation and thus she changed the story line. Because, why on EARTH would you kill off Mark? A really wonderful book would have taken up where the last one left off, telling the story of Brige's wedding and marriage to Mark and the arrival of a Darcy heir.
But jumping - what, 12? 14? - years into the future and finding the exact some woman with no insight, no maturity and no self-respect was really...

2. I Am So Lost
I love Bridget Jones, so much so that I got off work early today just to read this novel I have been waiting for. The novel where I hoped Bridget and Mark finally worked out all the kinks and were having a baby, only to have Daniel come in and mess it all up. I mean come on... third times a charm right? I wanted to be shocked by this whole book so I read none of the clues or hints dropped leading up to the release. But I hated this book and I don't use that word lightly. The book starts off talking about people and things COMPLETELY unfamiliar to me and in a way that looks like a vomiting Twitter feed. Once characters are explained I'm left thinking - why the hell so much later in life? Why am I getting invested in these new characters when the old characters are wilting away with little care? We missed all the good stuff? Where it does pick it it stumbles into things unknown again and then the bomb drops... Fielding killed off one of the most beloved, ESSENTIAL characters of the...

No preconceived notions here
I think a lot of people have been dissapointed that the author didn't follow their personal hopes for how Bridget would live out her life. To enjoy this book, you need to clear all that out of your head and start with a neutral attitude. Once you get past the initial shock of what her situation is, this book is very enjoyable. Yes it is darker and a little more ridiculous, but I think the ridiculousness helps to offset the darker parts. I like how Bridget has in some ways matured, but she also still can't help but fall back to her old ways and fears as we all do from time to time. I was sad at Mark dying, but the way the story is told, you really do want to cheer on Bridget to make it on her own. I say this book is worth a read, but DO NOT stop after only the beginning part, which is the hardest to swallow for old fans I think. It gets better as it goes, I promise!

Things That Matter: Three Decades of Passions, Pastimes and Politics

From America’s preeminent columnist, named by the Financial Times the most influential commentator in the nation, the long-awaited collection of Charles Krauthammer’s essential, timeless writings.   A brilliant stylist known for an uncompromising honesty that challenges conventional wisdom at every turn, Krauthammer has for decades dazzled readers with his keen insight into politics and government. His weekly column is a must-read in Washington and across the country. Now, finally, the best of Krauthammer’s intelligence, erudition and wit are collected in one volume.   Readers will find here not only the country’s leading conservative thinker offering a passionate defense of limited government, but also a highly independent ...

This 21st Century give to us some advantages, like this :
1. Expected to hate this book, was pleasantly surprised
I admit it: I got it wrong in my opinion of Charles Krauthammer. I thought he was just an unoriginal talking head mimicking the latest right-wing rhetoric. After reading this compilation of some three decades of his writing, I see that Krauthammer is a thoughtful intellectual. I may at times disagree with his perspective, but I can absolutely see now how gets to said perspective. The highly personal introduction is fascinating and sets the table for the writings that follow. His sense of humor and his sense of humanity come through in many passages. At times I actually laughed out loud at his writings; at other times I was enthralled by his ability to "paint with words" (most noticeably his column of September 12, 2001). Krauthammer is generally not divisive in his politics and, in fact, has evolved some of his beliefs over time as any reasonable person often does. He also has a real knack for taking difficult and at times abstract concepts and boiling them down to a comprehensible...

2. Insightful and Wise
Charles Krauthammer is one of the most intelligent, lucid commentators and writers of our time. He is always insightful and fair. I trust his wisdom and have been looking forward for weeks for his book to come out. I downloaded it at midnight last night as soon as it was available, and started reading. It is everything I had hoped for and more. His is the voice of reason in politics and society today.

Lost and Found in Cedar Cove (Short Story) (Kindle Single) (Rose Harbor)

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERDebbie Macomber’s heartwarming new series, set at the Rose Harbor Inn in  picturesque Cedar Cove, displays the author’s signature talent for creating characters who feel like friends, and small towns that feel like home. In this original short story available exclusively as an eBook, Jo Marie Rose readies her inn for spring, turning to her new friends Grace and Olivia when she needs them most.   Jo Marie has big plans for her bed-and-breakfast. With the help of handyman Mark Taylor, she intends to plant a beautiful rose garden in time for her upcoming open house. Jo Marie and Mark rarely see eye to eye—especially on matters of home improvement—but she knows he has her best interests at heart. After the two...

1. excerpt, not a short story
this is the first four chapters of rose harboe inn, not a new story. while a good story, if you have read the book don't waste your money buying this. i feel like i have been cheated. i thought kindle singles were not supposed to be excerpts.

2. Five Pages Does Not a Short Story Make
Chapter One captured my interest immediately. I have read some of Debbie Macomber's other books and was looking forward to an enjoyable, though short story of 48 pages, and was shocked when it suddenly ended after 5 pages! It seemed as though Chapter 1 would not have ended at that point. The next page showed a photo advertisement for the Cedar Cove Hallmark Series. I hoped that, perhaps, the photo was an insert and the remaining 43 pages would appear, but such was not the case. This book did not cost the typical amount for one of this fine author's books, but I cannot afford to spend the amount charged for 5 pages. I hope that, somehow, there was a mistake in the printing or production and this was delivered in such an abbreviated form because of an error. I am grateful to say that I have never experienced this in any of my previous orders and hope that such will never occur again.

The Girl Who Can't Say No: Bound To The Billionaire (Part One) (A BDSM Erotic Romance Novelette)

When the anxious and timid actress Chloe Everett turns up to audition for a minor movie role, it's just another nerve-wracking day. For the quiet and darkly handsome producer Daniel Grant however, it's an unspoken opportunity. Beset by the nerves that have plagued her since childhood, Chloe agrees to one more audition, alone with the billionaire movie magnate... This steamy 17,500 word novelette is the first installment of Ashley Spector's thrilling erotic romance series, The Girl Who Can't Say No. Intended for an adult audience, this enthralling tale follows a dark and secretive billionaire, who absolutely must have his own way; a timid and naive young actress, desperate to break out of her shell, and a deluge of juicy, domineering sex sce...

This Contemporary give to us some advantages, like this :
1. Watered down 50 shades
This author gets credit for correct grammar and punctuation but this story has been told and re-told ad nauseam. Read Sylvia Day's trilogy if this is your genre. For a free book, it was okay. I am getting very sick of authors writing a "short story" but you really have to purchase a bunch of other books to get the beginning, middle, and an ending.

This author does have a writing style that I enjoy but a few times it wandered off into left field with descriptions and then sharply jumped right back into the story.

The characters were a little flat and one dimensional. Although it was explained that Chloe hopes that using acting will help her overcome her anxiety; it wasn't at all believable. The anxiety bordered on ridiculous as well as the fact that a 22 year old virgin would lose her virginity to someone she spoke to for 5 minutes. I think it can be done in a book and be believed, this just wasn't it.

Next, I am so sick of the billionaire being taken...

2. No good
A waste of time to download ..took me longer to download it than it did to read it. Plot was boring and pretty much the story itself was non existant. I was disappointed

My Two Cents Worth
I do not enjoy giving extremely harsh reviews but sometimes I feel duty-bound to, especially when it is blatantly apparent that the writer in question is out to make a quick buck by peddling dung disguised in a pretty wrapper. (I am referring of course to the installment scheme)

I honestly did not enjoy this novella at all. It started out well enough, barring the grammatical errors and the numerous misspellings, but by the 30% mark I found myself scanning over pages and grinding my teeth. The 'lowly, virgin submissive meets gorgeous, demanding billionaire with deviant sexual inclinations and embarks on a life-changing adventure' has been done too many times before. What's more, it has been done by better storytellers in possession a superior and less contrived grasp of the English language.

This tale fell flat mainly because of the uninspired direction. There was no mystery, no real conflict, not an inkling of personality.

My advice to the potential...

An Unexpected Widow (The Colorado Brides Series)

Hannah Hoffman Clark is the spirited young wife of Denver City's only preacher, Frank Clark. After arriving by wagon to the howling wilderness of the unexplored west, they settled on land, built a home, and began what they thought would be a long and prosperous life together. After an accident leaves Frank without feeling in his legs, the dream of self-sufficiency suddenly slips away, but even more tragedy is on the horizon for Hannah.Once widowed, she struggles to cope with her loss, relying on those her husband had hired, especially Nathan Weaver, a no good gambler and drunkard. While the tenuous hold she has on her sanity crumbles, her connection with Nathan becomes something far greater than she could have ever imagined, but her family ...

This Western give to us some advantages, like this :
1. 5 star writing skills
What I LOVED about this book:

the author sucked me into the characters from the very first page. Each and every one is well rounded and unique. I loved the playful banter between the man and wife, this kind of writing 'shows rather than tells' us their personalities so right from the start it felt like I knew them. She loves her husband and the reader does too which is why 'what happens' is so traumatic.
I won't be spoiling it (cos you know from the title what happens) but the emotion portrayed is raw and gutsy; the first half of the book my heart was in my throat. I like a book that can trigger emotion from the reader. I want to CARE what happens to the characters and I did.

What I DIDN'T like about the book:

I thought that the intimate interaction between husband and wife was borderline smutty. While not neccesarily explicit I suppose if you were to give it a TV rating it would be a strong PG-13 (but that being said I would not recommend this...

2. Not Christian romance!!
Why was this book in the Christian fiction section? When I read Christian books I don't want to read about sex. Someone said it wasn't explicit content. Maybe PG-13. Well, I'm here to tell you not to read this book if enjoy clean, Christian romance!

Unexpected Pleasure
I had the unexpected pleasure of reading a first work by Carre White. This story about the first of four sisters to make her way to Denver City is an original attempt to capture the atmosphere of an era of settlement, while examining relationships forged during that era. The hazards of frontier life, the changing times, and the flux of events and their effects on frontier men and women are treated with plausible situations, characters and dialogue. In addition to action scenes, there is realistic detail and common sense lessons that emerge from the actions and dialogue of the characters. Ms. White, through her believable characters and realistic dialogue captures the essence of the Christian work ethic. She also combines this with an effective handling of the emotional attraction between the main characters. Denver City has it all: a saloon, a parlor house and a church. The problems of alcoholism, prostitution and isolation are handled with a light, non-sermonizing touch, and...
